Rights & Represention

Both Sides Now is a character-driven women’s fiction novel exploring themes of self-acceptance, navigating grief and loss, complex family dynamics, new love and the power of music and memory.

The story follows Joni— a young woman living in Sydney, Australia—as she navigates the aftermath of the loss of her Nan, Birdie. When she discovers Birdie’s old journal and letters that contain secrets that have remained hidden for almost fifty years, she journeys to Edinburgh in search of answers.

There she meets the one person who might know her better than she knows herself, and discovers that living in the present is perhaps the best way to truly honour the past.

Relatable flawed characters, layered emotional depth, witty humour and the rich magic of history, memory and music positions this book strongly for international publishing and film or television adaptation.

Both Sides Now blends the magic of The Lost Bookshop , the journey of self-discovery and navigating grief of The Seven Year Slip, and the ensemble cast of About Time, with the raw and truthful prose of a Joni Mitchell song.

Author Bio

Madeleine (Madi) is an Australian indie author. Her work explores the power of music, memory, self-acceptance, family, grief and a love that transcends time itself.

Known for her bookstagram content under the name @one.orange.patch.reads, Madi is an avid reader, reviewer and collector of all things cosy and whimsical, who finds joy in sharing her passion for books with an incredible online community of book besties.

Her debut novel, Both Sides Now, is set to release later this year.

She lives in Newcastle, on the east coast of Australia, with her many books, sourdough starter Sezzy and (perhaps) excessive collection of coffee mugs.

A woman with red hair in a claw clip, glasses, and a white shirt holding a stack of books in front of a bookshelf filled with colourful books. The woman is seated against a rust/orange toned wall.
